Member subscription states, available only in our Data Exports or via the Community API, indicate where each member is in their Community lifecycle.
Overview of Subscription States
Each member in your Community exists in one of the following states:
- Live
- Opted-Out
- Blocked
- Deleted
Subscription State Definitions
Live
A member becomes live when they:
- Complete your sign-up form or Reply Y opt-in
- Are added via API, import, or integration using the preopt method
Key details:
- They can receive messages
- They are part of your active audience
Opted-Out
A member is opted-out if they:
- Reply STOP at any time
- Are unsubscribed manually by an admin in the dashboard or mobile app
- Are unsubscribed via API
Key details:
- They cannot receive messages
- They still exist as a detailed member record
- They can rejoin at any time, but only by replying START
- Members receive these instructions in their opt-out confirmation text
Blocked
A member is blocked if they:
- Have been blocked by an admin in the dashboard or mobile app
Key details:
- They cannot receive messages
- Incoming messages from them are ignored
- Reach out to us if you need to unblock a member
Deleted
A member is deleted if they:
- Requested their data be deleted
- via email, or by texting Help --> Manage Preferences --> Delete My Data

Failed to complete an opt-in within 30 days, via any method
- This is a frequent cause of member opt-in issues
- These members can only join your Community by sending a text to the number. Any incoming text to your Community number will return your welcome message and a signup link to the member
Key details:
- These members can only join your Community by sending a text to the number
- They are no longer a detailed member record and you do not have access to their information, including the phone number
- They cannot receive messages
- They may still appear in exports for historical purposes
